Pirates vs Brewers

Play Type: Free

Gerrit Cole has made himself at home on the road, winning seven straight away from PNC Park to keep the Pittsburgh Pirates in contention in the National League Central. The 26-year-old ace aims to keep his good fortune going on Wednesday afternoon as the Pirates vie to salvage a split of their abbreviated two-game series against the host Milwaukee Brewers.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (10-8, 3.96 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (9-6, 3.72)

Cole recorded his seventh straight quality start on Thursday after allowing three runs on six hits across a season-high eight innings of a 7-5 victory at Detroit. The right-hander has handcuffed Milwaukee in three appearances this season, permitting three earned runs while striking out 23 batters against four walks in 21 innings. Cole settled for a no-decision in his last encounter with the Brewers on July 19 despite fanning a campaign-best 10 batters and yielding just one run in seven frames.

Nelson was blitzed for a career-high nine earned runs and 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings of an 11-10 setback versus Cincinnati on Friday. The 28-year-old also tasted defeat in his last encounter with Pittsburgh, yielding four runs on six hits over five innings of a 4-2 loss on July 20. Nelson has struggled against the likes of Starling Marte (.333), Andrew McCutchen (.318) and Josh Harrison (.304).

Pirates are 7-0 in Coles last 7 road starts. Brewers are 1-4 in Nelsons last 5 starts. Pirates are 4-1 in Coles last 5 starts vs. Brewers.

Tigers vs Rangers

Rangers (Run-line)

Veteran left-hander Cole Hamels puts his undefeated record at Globe Life Park this season on the line when the Texas Rangers look to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. Texas has won five of six games and is part of a crowded American League wild-card race, trailing the Los Angeles Angels by two games for the final spot.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (3-3, 6.69 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Cole Hamels (7-1, 3.31)

Sanchez had provided a boost for the Tigers when he returned to the rotation, but he's starting to show why he wound up in the bullpen in the first place. The 33-year-old Venezuelan lost for the third time in four starts when he was knocked around for five runs and eight hits by Minnesota last time out after surrendering five homers in his previous turn. Sanchez is 2-4 with a 7.84 ERA lifetime against the Rangers.

Hamels followed his first complete game since 2015 by turning in another strong performance in his last start, blanking Houston on three hits over seven innings. Since he was acquired from Philadelphia at the trade deadline in 2015, the 33-year-old owns a 29-7 record with the Rangers.

Tigers are 5-13 in Sanchezs last 18 road starts and are 2-8 in Sanchezs last 10 road starts vs. a team with a losing record. Rangers are 27-5 in Hamels' last 32 starts vs. a team with a losing record. Home team is 9-3 in Barbers last 12 Wednesday games behind home plate.
