Braves/Marlins Over 7.5

The National League East is rich with young pitching talent, but Jacob Turner and Mike Minor have not distinguished themselves during disappointing 2014 seasons. Turner takes the mound for the Miami Marlins on Tuesday when they visit Minor and the Atlanta Braves as both hurlers look to leave behind their first-half struggles. Turner posted a 3.74 ERA last season as a 22-year-old but has seen his ERA balloon above six and spent the last month in the bullpen, while the 26-year-old Minor won once in his past 10 starts while allowing four runs or more four times in his past seven outings. Turner returns to the rotation after eight relief appearances, during which he allowed 21 hits and posted a 5.74 ERA in 15 2/3 innings. He started and lost against the Braves on May 31, yielding five runs (four earned) on seven hits in five innings, and fell from the rotation by allowing five runs in each of his next two starts. Minor beat the Cubs in his final start before the All-Star break July 12, but gave up six runs and 11 hits in six innings. He has surrendered nine hits or more in four of his past seven starts. Minor’s WHIP of 1.49 is substantially higher than the 1.09 he posted last season. I see value in over the total.

Reds + 110

The Cincinnati Reds already were scuffling on offense before their National League-best defense let them down against a team they have dominated this season. The Reds, who continue their three-game set at the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, had defeated their National League Central rivals in seven of their 10 meetings prior to Monday’s 5-2 loss. Bailey, who posted a 0.53 ERA in his previous two starts before the injury when he faced the Cubs, has faced the Brewers three times in 2014 – going 1-1 with a 3.22 ERA. Making his first major-league start in nearly two months, Nelson suffered his first career loss in a 10-2 setback against St. Louis on July 12. The Oregon native was pounded for eight runs (six earned) on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings – a complete departure from his May 25 season debut in which he held Miami scoreless over 5 2/3 frames. Take the Reds to bounce back tonight.

Red Sox – 113

The Boston Red Sox are toying with the emotions of their fan base with a hot streak that is threatening to catapult them back into contention. The Red Sox go for their sixth straight win when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays for the second contest of a four-game set on Tuesday. Boston appeared ready to sell off all their veteran assets two weeks ago but has won eight of its last nine to provide the organization some hope, while the Blue Jays move in the other direction. The Red Sox showed exactly how much the fortunes of the two franchises have changed in the last month by putting up season highs in runs, hits (18) and home runs (four) in a 14-1 drubbing in Monday’s series opener. Peavy’s lone win came at Toronto on April 25, when he held the Blue Jays to one run and five hits in seven frames. Happ appeared in relief before the break at Tampa Bay and was reached for two runs while recording just two outs. The 31-year-old was about that effective in his last start, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings to suffer a loss at the Los Angeles Angels on July 7. Happ recorded a win at Boston on May 20 despite surrendering four runs and seven hits in five innings. The Red Sox are the play.
