Padres/Marlins under 7 ½

Jarred Cosart will face the team that sent him packing at the trade deadline when the San Diego Padres visit the Miami Marlins on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series. Cosart will look to dent the postseason hopes of the Marlins, who are 1 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second wild card in the National League.Taking the mound for Miami on Friday will be converted reliever David Phelps, who was shifted to the starting rotation following the trade of Cosart. A more pressing concern for Miami is an offense that has failed to put up more than three runs in five straight games.

Cosart is still seeking his first win as he prepares to make his ninth start this season, but he is coming off a pair of strong outings. The 26-year-old struck out a season-high seven and gave up one run and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings versus Arizona in his fifth straight no-decision last Friday. In 14 appearances (13 starts) at Marlins Park, he is 2-4 with a 2.49 ERA while giving up two homers in 79 2/3 innings.

Phelps has pitched deeper into the game in each of his four starts, going six scoreless innings while striking out nine and allowing two hits at Pittsburgh on Saturday. He has permitted a total of three runs in his four starts and registered 17 strikeouts over 11 1/3 innings while notching back-to-back victories. Phelps owns a 0-1 record and 3.75 ERA in three appearances (two starts) versus San Diego.

Under is 4-1 in Padres last 5 road games vs. a right-handed starter.Under is 6-1 in Marlins last 7 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.

Cubs

Two of the majors’ top young shortstops meet Friday as the Los Angeles Dodgers open a three-game series against the visiting Chicago Cubs, who have won 22 of their past 27 games and stand 36 games over .500. The Dodgers’ Corey Seager is favored to win the NL Rookie of the Year award, while Chicago’s Addison Russell has homered five times in his last six games while being a defensive standout. The Cubs have built a commanding lead in the NL Central behind a deep lineup and a starting rotation that has gone 15-1 with a 1.83 ERA in 22 games this month, including 17 quality starts.

Montgomery allowed one run over 4 1/3 innings against Colorado on Saturday in his first start since July 17 and made a strong impression on manager Joe Maddon. “I thought he was outstanding,” Maddon told reporters. “In the larger picture, we think he can be very, very helpful to us.” The 27-year-old was acquired from Seattle on July 20 and has gone 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA in his last five games covering 10 1/3 innings.

Norris is rejoining the Dodgers rotation after allowing one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning of relief Monday at Cincinnati. The 31-year-old has gone 3-3 with a 5.67 ERA since coming to the Dodgers on June 30 in a trade from Atlanta.

The Cubs are on an absolute tear and I’ll back them tonight at this very cheap price.

This is my NL Game of the Month!

Royals

Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright looks to resume his breakthrough campaign when he comes off the disabled list to start the opener of a three-game series against the visiting Kansas City Royals on Friday night. Boston went 7-4 on its 11-game road trip after ending the trek with consecutive one-run losses at Tampa Bay.

Kennedy turned in another stellar outing for KC in a dominating performance against Minnesota on Saturday, tossing eight scoreless innings of four-hit ball and not walking a batter. During a five-start unbeaten streak, the 31-year-old has yielded a mere three runs and 22 hits over 34 innings. Kennedy gave up two runs over 5 2/3 innings of a no-decision in his second career start against the Red Sox on May 18.Kansas City's bullpen has not allowed a run in 38 2/3 innings -- the longest streak since San Francisco's 39 1/3-inning run in 2002-03.

Wright improved to 5-0 over his last seven starts by blanking the Los Angeles Dodgers on three hits Aug. 5 for his fourth complete game of the season. The soon-to-be 32-year-old Californian went the distance in a losing effort at Kansas City on May 18, giving up three runs and five hits in the 3-2 setback. Even though he is unbeaten since June 25, Wright has been tagged for 20 runs in his last four home starts.

There is great value here with the Royals as a nice underdog.

Mariners/White Sox under 7 ½

Felix Hernandez is seeking his fifth consecutive victory while All-Star Chris Sale aims to remain part of the American League Cy Young Award race when the Seattle Mariners visit the Chicago White Sox on Friday for the second contest of their four-game series. Hernandez hasn't lost in seven starts following a stint on the disabled list while Sale is tied for third in the AL in victories despite a recent drought.

Hernandez, who missed seven-plus weeks due to a calf injury, is two victories away from his eighth consecutive season of winning 10 or more games. Sale's strong first three months hit a bump when he went 0-4 over a six-start stretch, but he rebounded by scattering three hits over eight scoreless innings in a victory over Oakland on Saturday.

Hernandez defeated Milwaukee in his last turn as he allowed two runs and eight hits in eight innings. He has struck out eight batters in each of his last three starts and is four shy of reaching 100 strikeouts for the 11th straight campaign.

Sale was splendid in a no-decision against the Mariners on July 18, when he allowed one hit in eight scoreless innings. He has served up just one homer over his last seven starts after surrendering six in his final three turns prior to the All-Star break. Sale is 4-0 with a 2.22 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and .173 batting average against in eight career appearances (six starts) versus Seattle.

Under is 8-3-1 in Hernandezs last 12 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.Under is 16-7 in Sales last 23 home starts.Under is 4-0 in Hernandezs last 4 starts with Carapazza behind home plate.
