Oddsmakers set Illinois win total at 7.5 wins for 2009

football picks

Illinois 2009 Betting Odds: Over 7½ Wins -165 , Under 7½ Wins +125

Illinois could be a surprise team in the Big 10 this year. They undoubtedly will have one of the most explosive offenses in the country led by star quarterback Juice Williams. He can cause havoc for opposing defenses with not only his legs but also his arm. The Illini have four guys vying for the starting running back position so someone will have to step up to aid Williams in the run game. Junior wide receiver, Arrelious Benn is excellent and will be Williams’ go to guy. The offensive line returns three starters which should improve on pass protection as well as opening holes for Illinois tailbacks. The defensive line and secondary are causes for slight concern. However, if Josh Brent returns after getting a DUI in the spring he will pair up with Corey Liuget to give Illinois two outstanding defensive tackles. The safety position is a concern as well but coaches think Supo Sanni can be a solid starter for them on defense.

All in all the schedule sets up where I have Illinois losing to Ohio State and Penn State for sure. They will be challenged by Michigan State but they get them at home. Another tough road test is going to be at Cincinnati on a Friday night. Even if they lose all four of those games, I think they will win the other 8. I agree with the odds makers decision to place hefty vig on the Illini at -165 to go over 7½ wins. I’d lay to the price and take the over as the Illini finish 8-4 in my opinion.

BetUs.com sets Tennessee Vols and South Carolina Cocks win totals at 7 for ’09

college football picks

TrevRogers.com considers BetUs.com the #1 online sportsbook for many reasons. One of them being the huge amount of football betting futures odds that they make available for bettors before the college football or NFL season kicks off. We have been taking a looks at the “Over/Under” team win totals for certain college football teams this week. We continue today with a look at the 2009 college football betting odds for the Tennessee Volunteers and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Tennessee Volunteers: Over 7 Wins +110 , Under 7 Wins -150

The Tennessee Volunteers are coming off a disappointing 5-7 season but the arrival of new head coach Lane Kiffin has people excited in Knoxville about the ’09 campaign. Tennessee returns just 13 starters but there is still plenty of talent on this team to make a vast improvement from last year. Much of the success will depend on quarterback, Jonathan Crompton. He’s been through four offensive coordinators in four years but Kiffin plans on using Crompton’s athleticism and arm strength to stretch opposing offenses. Tennessee is very young at the skill positions but the talented freshman they’ve brought in could be difference makers. The defense was very good last season but returns just six starters. They will not be as dominant as the unit that finished third in the nation in overall defense. They lack experience and depth at the linebacker position as well as defensive line. Despite the inexperience, I have Tennessee penciled in for 8 regular season wins. They should win their first two against Western Kentucky and UCLA. Then they have home games against Ohio University, Auburn, South Carolina, Memphis, and Vanderbilt, all of which are very winnable games. I’ll take the over 7 wins for Tennessee as I see them improving from the ’08 campaign.

South Carolina Gamecocks: Over 7 Wins +150 , Under 7 Wins -200

South Carolina returns just 11 starters from a team that went 7-6 a year ago. They will likely open the season 0-2 in my opinion with road games at North Carolina State, who is going to be a solid team this year, and then at Georgia. They get Mississippi and Florida at home but I don’t see them winning either one of those games. On October 17th, they travel to Alabama which figures to be too much of a rugged road test and they also have to go to Tennessee. I see this team winning 6 regular season games at best and that’s only if they can take care of Clemson at home to close out the season. South Carolina lost quarterback Smelley leaving huge question marks at that position and if you don’t have a quarterback in the SEC, you’re asking for trouble. Depth on the defensive side of the ball is also a major concern. I just don’t see this team winning more than 6 regular season games. The schedule is too difficult and they’ve simply lost too many good players from last year.

2009 College Football Betting Odds for Ole Miss, Georgia, LSU

college football picks

We continue our look at the 2009 SEC College Football “Over/Under” win totals set by online sportsbooks BetUS.com. Today we focus the 2009 College Football Betting Odds radar on Ole Miss, Georgia and LSU.

Mississippi Rebels: Over 9 -115 Under 9 -125
I think the odds makers are really underestimating this Ole Miss team. They are my pick to win the SEC West as they return 16 starters from a team that went 9-4 last season. If Jevan Snead can get solid protection from his offensive line, he could have a big year. The receivers are very good and the running backs are talented and deep as well. This is definitely a potential Top 10 team as the schedule is situated just right for them to rack up a lot of wins this season. I have them penciled in for at least 10 wins. They play Memphis, Southeast Louisiana, UAB, and Northern Arizona out of conference, all of which will be wins for the Rebels. They also get Alabama, Tennessee, and LSU all at home. Their road games in conference don’t look to be too much of a concern either. With the talent and the soft schedule, I think Ole Miss definitely goes over the number of 9 wins.

Georgia Bulldogs: Over 8½ -110 Under 8½ -130
This is another number where I think the odds makers absolutely got it right. Georgia returns 15 starters from a team that went 10-3 but gone are their three stud skill position players in Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno, and Mohamed Massaquoi. Senior quarterback Joe Coz will look to fill Stafford’s shoes and many experts agree that he can be a competent quarterback. The offense will use a running back by committee approach behind what should be a pretty solid offensive line. The defense should be a solid group but not spectacular. Much of the success will depend on their front four. Georgia opens up at Oklahoma State which could be a tough match-up on the road. They also could lose to LSU at home, Florida in Jacksonville, and at Georgia Tech. They should win at least 8 regular season games and I think they will get some sweet revenge against Georgia Tech in the regular season finale. Therefore, I’ll go with over the total of 8½ for the BullDogs and I’ll peg them as a 9 win team.

LSU Tigers: Over 8½ -105 Under 8½ -135
LSU is another team that figures to be in the mix to win the SEC West. They return 14 starters from a team that went 8-5 and won a bowl game last season. They however have a pretty tough schedule as they play Florida, at Georgia, at Alabama, and at Mississippi. However, even if they lose all four of those games, they should win the rest leaving them with 8 regular season wins. They have the talent to win at least one of those four games so I will also go over the total of 8½ with this LSU squad.

Florida Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers ’09 Betting Odds

football picks

BetUs.com has recently posted over/under odds on season win totals for a number of college football programs this season. We will be doing a series of articles in which we briefly preview each team that has been posted and provide a prediction of whether they will go over or under the posted number of wins. The articles to come will be grouped by conference for reference sake. We will start with three teams out of the SEC.

Florida Gators: Over 11 Wins -105 , Under 11 Wins -135
Everyone has the Gators posted as their pre-season pick to win the National Championship in ’09 and so do I. This is an extremely talented team that went 13-1 last season, won the National Championship, and returns 18 starters. That’s right, 18! Tim Tebow, college football’s Mr. Everything has returned and the entire defense is back along with all 11 back ups. This is a very dangerous team and I think will land right on the number 11. LSU has huge revenge set for the Gators this season after being blown out 51-21 last season. That one loss pulls the Gators to 11-1. Every thing would have to go perfect for the defending champs in order for an UNDER bet not to cash. I just do not see perfection on the menu 2 years in a row for Urban Meyer and the Gators. Take the UNDER on Florida.

Alabama Crimson Tide: Over 9½ Wins +120 , Under 9½ Wins -160
I think the odds makers have pinpointed this line right on the money. The Crimson Tide only return four starters on offense and will be extremely inexperienced at the quarterback position as John Parker Wilson has graduated. The defense will be very stout as they return nine starters from a unit that was very good a season ago. Make no mistake about it, Nick Saban will be relying on his defense this season to win games. I have them penciled in for 9 regular season wins. They start out the season against a very good Virginia Tech team who could spoil the season opener for Alabama. I also think they will lose at Mississippi. The next two toughest games are both at home which I think they will spit against Tennessee and LSU. They will beat Tennessee and possibly let down the following week and lose at home to LSU. I’ll take the Under -160 as a potential lack of offensive cohesion may stifle Alabama early on in the 2009 season.

Auburn Tigers: Over 7½ Wins +170 , Under 7½ Wins -230
Auburn lost six of their last seven games last season and finished just 5-7 overall. I expect them to be better this season as they return 15 starters. However, new head coach Gene Chizik has his work cut out for him. The Tigers will face four teams likely to be rated in the Top 15 this year. They are at LSU and at Georgia. Meanwhile, they will face both Mississippi and Alabama at home. Throw in a non-conference game against West Virginia and you’re looking at a pretty tough road to 8 wins. I think they could win 7 but not 8. I say they stay under the posted total of 7½ wins as they have to find an identity on offense.

Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos Fight Predictions

August 15, 2009 will arguably mark the biggest event in history for MMA organization Strikeforce. The card is stacked but the fight everyone is talking about is the match featuring Gina “Conviction” Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. These two gladiators are sure to steal the show in San Jose and further cement Strikeforce as a contender in the world of MMA.

Tale of the Tape:

The face of women’s mixed martial arts, Gina Carano will put an undefeated 7-0 record on the line in what will undoubtedly be her toughest challenge yet. Carano made her MMA debut after finishing out a successful muay tai career with a record of 12-1-1. The Texas native got her start in the Las Vegas-based World Pro FC and World Extreme Fighting organizations where she gained impressive knockout victories over Leticia Pestova and Rosi Sexton. In no time, she moved up to Strikeforce and then onto Elite XC, where she convincingly won all four bouts she competed in.

Now being trained by UFC legend Randy Couture at his Xtreme Couture gym, Carano is looking to improve the only real vulnerability in her approach: conditioning. Due to struggles to make weight for her last fight, Carno was forced to deal with adversity and criticism after being taken down early in the first round. Despite a rough start, she got back on her feet and then proceeded to deliver a beat down. In the end, Carano scored a unanimous decision, marking the third decision victory in her three-year MMA career. Live MMA Betting Odds

Cristiane Santos will pose as a serious threat to Carano’s undefeated streak. The Cyborg has won her last seven fights, which included a TKO victory over Hitomi Akano at the Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz card. Santos made her professional MMA debut in 2005, a fight that saw her submitting to Erica Paes in the first round. Since that one and only loss, the Cyborg hasn’t looked back, racking up seven straight victories in dominating form. The Team Chute Box fighter made her American debut last summer in Elite XC, punching her way to a second round TKO against Shayna Baszler in July. That was followed up three months later in a unanimous decision victory over Yoko Takahashi at the Elite XC: Heat event. While Santos missed weight by 51/2 pounds for her last fight in April, she used that to her advantage with additional strength to overpower the highly touted Akano en route to a third round TKO win. Bet on Carano vs. Cyborg

Gina Carano vs. Cyborg Fight Prediction:

These ladies are standing high atop the women’s MMA division and pound for pound, they could be two of the best fighters in the world. One on one training with Randy Couture over the last few months should help Carano improve her game tremendously, perhaps enough to show a little more stamina and keep up with Santos’ well conditioned frame. Cyborg definitely will not be able to push over Carano like she has done her other opponents. More than likely, she will be less aggressive until the time is right and score a knockout or submission victory. Bet on Carano vs. Cyborg

Five Fearless NFL Predictions for 2009

With the great Tom Brady returning from knee surgery and a full year’s rest, the odds makers are declaring the New England Patriots as the favorites to win yet another Super Bowl. With a healthy Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker, it could happen, but someone should still let the people in Sin City know that there are 31 other teams looking to make a run at the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Though we’re still nearly a month away from preseason play, here are five bold predictions to take with you into the 2009 NFL season.

1.) Done Before the First Kickoff

Rookie Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels hasn’t coached a single game but has already been involved in enough drama to fill an entire season. Franchise quarterback Jay Cutler flew the coupe to Chicago and now it is up to an unproven Kyle Orton to lead the troops. Factor in a disgruntled Brandon Marshall and you have a team that is doomed to fail before it even steps foot on the field. The Denver Broncos are +2500 to win the AFC in 2009 and +5500 to win the Super Bowl

2.) Another Disappointing Season for America’s Team

You would think the Dallas Cowboys could finally get over the hump after ridding the locker room of a troublesome T.O. Don’t count on it. While the Giants, Eagles and Redskins have all made moves to improve their team, the Cowboys haven’t done much aside from practically giving away their best receiver. Wade Phillips better hope Tony Romo can find a new target in Roy Williams or he could find himself in the unemployment line in 2010. The Dallas Cowboys are listed at +250 odds to win the NFC East in 2009, +650 Odds to win the NFC and +1500 to win the 2010 Super Bowl.

3.) The Falcons Take the Next Step

Michael Vick may be a free man but he is a faint memory as far as the Atlanta Falcons are concerned. As a rookie QB, Matt Ryan took the league by surprise and storm last season by showing incredible poise and accuracy on the field. While he won’t be sneaking up on anybody this time around, the Falcons have the ammunition that it takes to find themselves in the NFC Championship game at the very least. The Flacons are listed at +2200 odds to win the Super Bowl.

4.) Back to Reality

The Arizona Cardinals will enter the 2009 NFL season with last year’s Super Bowl roster pretty much intact. Unfortunately, history isn’t on their side as Super Bowl losers don’t fair all that well the following season. If New England and Chicago aren’t good enough examples for you, just keep in mind that this is the Cardinals we’re talking about here. Just getting to the playoffs was cause for a parade. Do you think the Cardinals will repeat as NFC Champs? A $100 bet pays out $1200 if they do at BetUs.com

5.) Still Number One

After going a record 0-16, things can be looking nothing but up for the lowly Detroit Lions. However, if you take a glance at their brutal schedule, you will see that the losing streak could possibly continue for quite sometime. Sorry Lions fan, but it might be mid-season before Detroit picks up its first win and even that is pushing it. On a good note, the mighty silver and blue can still hold it down as the undisputed worst team in all of the NFL. A $100 bet pays out $1400 if you think the Lions will shock the world and win the NFC North in 2009.

Congratulations to all of the new and old clients of TrevRogers.com who cashed in Monday night on my BIG top rated “National League Total of the Year #2″ selection! We had a push on the 9 run total by the 3rd inning and eventually the Reds/Dodgers added 3 more runs to cash the big ticket for us.

Last night’s “Top Rated” winner moves my record for these special selections to 116-71-9 since 2006. That is 45 games over .500!!! For 2009 my top rated picks are now 19-12-1! Always be on the look out for my “Top Rated” plays which are any “Game of the Year”, INSIDER, or PRIVATE PLAY selections.

My free play selection for Monday night missed with the Boston Red Sox and John Smoltz -105 over the Texas Rangers. That makes 3 lossed in a row now for the Sox…..do yourself a favor and take them tonight with Beckett -165. My free baseball pick record is now 14-9 YTD for +407 units.

Tuesday Night Free Baseball Pick:

Take the TB Rays vs. Chicago White Sox to go OVER the posted total of 10 runs Tuesday night.

Monday Free Pick: Red Sox -105 with John Smoltz

baseball picks

Another 1-1 Sunday as we continue to hit our free baseball picks and miss on the premium selections. Sunday’s free MLB winner cashed with ease as the Cubs vs. Nationals flew OVER the posted total. My first “Private Play” of the 2009 MLB season lost on the TB Rays vs. KC Royals OVER 8.5 runs. Both teams combined to leave an astounding 23 runners on base during the game…..that is ridiculous! Anyway, my free pick record YTD moves to 14-8 for +512 units!

Free Baseball Pick for Monday July 20th:

Good teams do not lose 3 games in a row, its just that simple. The Red Sox lost 2 of 3 to the Blue Jays and now travel to Texas face the sliding Rangers who have lost 4 of 5. John Smoltz looks to have worked the rust off after a few starts and is ready for a dominating performance tonight in Arlington, Texas. Take the Red Sox -105!

MLB Betting: Cubs vs. Nationals to go OVER Sunday

1-1 overall Saturday as my free baseball pick won with the TB Rays vs. Royals going UNDER the total of 7.5 runs. That victory moves my free sports picks record to 13-8 YTD for +412 units.

Unfortunately, my premium baseball selection missed Saturday night with the Twins vs. Rangers OVER call. The fact that both teams combined to leave a dozen players in scoring position certainly did not help our cause.

Free Sunday Baseball Pick:

As I am sure you saw in the headline for this blog post, I am going with the Chicago Cubs vs. Washington Nationals to go OVER the posted total of 9 Sunday afternoon in Washington.

Just a reminder that you can receive 2 weeks of picks absolutely FREE by signing up for a new account at BetUS.com and making a deposit. BetUs.com provides all TrevRogers.com visitors with a $500 Free bet if you deposit $500. So a $500 deposit equals $1000 for you to bet with in your new BetUs.com account. Not bad!

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Royals to go UNDER the betting total Saturday

Sorry for the late update today…..I passed on Friday night after wee took the “L” on the Thursday with the Florida Marlins losing once again to Jamie Moyer and the Phillies. My baseball free picks record stands at 12-8 +312 units YTD.

My free MLB betting winner for Saturday night is with out a doubt a “Captain Obvious” selection, but we have to go with it. Take the TB Rays vs. KC Royals to go UNDER the posted total of 7.5 runs as Kazmir and Grienke should put on a clinic tonight.

My premium baseball selection will be at 1pm(est). Click Trev’s Picks on the main menu to buy tonight’s winner or just click HERE.
